As I write this, I look out over the glittering water of the IJ. It is hot on The Dutch Weed Burger workboat and almost anxiously quiet. Only Pooh is my company on this early Monday morning and he lays very relaxing beside me. I hear some rustling of the leaves around the boat and gently on the background some morning chit chat from the surrounding boats. Is it silence before the storm? Is everybody in favor of the fact that we will open our joint on Wednesday? Probably not, but it feels like that. It feels like the world is focused only on this happening. That’s probably because my team and I have been so focused the last few months on the opening of our long-awaited dream: The Dutch Weed Burger Joint. The silence is nice, almost meditative, I’m together with Pooh and I feel a healthy excitement in my stomach. It’s real, we are doing this!
Next Wednesday, June 21, Summer Solstice, we will open our very first Joint. Just behind the Kinkerstraat in the Old-West of Amsterdam. No coffee shop, but a vegan-seaweed-fast food bar: a world premiere. A place where you can eat delicious food from morning till evening and have a beer with friends or just have a quick bite. The menu is one 100% plant-powered, enriched with seaweed and micro algae of, among others, the seaweed farm Zeewaar in the Oosterschelde, the Netherlands.
With a lot of love and pleasure, I have been working on this menu with several special people over the last two months and the result is new plant-based fast food classics like Seawharma, The Dutch Weed Dog and Wish ‘n Chips.
The Seawharma consists of grilled seitan and Dutch seaweed, flavoured with Arabic spices. Wrapped in traditional flatbread, stuffed with lettuce, red bell pepper, cucumber, red cabbage pickle and garlic Weed Sauce. Served with creamy Tahini Sauce.
The Dutch Weed Dog is the vegan pitbull amongst the dogs and is made of grilled seitan, enriched with Royal Kombu flakes and chipotle. Served with killer toppings like red sauerkraut, pickles, fried onions and topped off with our unbeatable Green Algae Mustard and Spicy BBQ sauce.
Wish ‘n Chips are Gold green, salty and crunchy Weed Bites, served with chips by Friethoes and Weed Sauce. The bites are made from protein-rich soy beans, fried in a chlorella batter. Vegan seafood at your service!
Of course, there are plenty of options on this special menu, and all of the mains can be spiced up with all kinds of vegan sauces and condiments like Japanese Miso with Dutch ingredients, Vegan Kimchi and Indian Lime Pickle.
In addition, I would like to introduce a few more pearls. A fast food menu is of course not complete without a creamy milkshake. That’s why I’m happy to present our amazing Mylkshakes with names like Supercalifragilistic Strawberry Strawberry, Badass Banana with a Punch or Vanilla and Fearless Chocolate Fudge. We blend them on site for you with Amsterdam vegan ice cream and Oatmilk.
And then for the cherry on top. After all that delicious plant-powered fast food, you will probably want to enjoy delicious vegan sweets. And you will, you can! With pleasure I present you our latest creations: sWeeds. Meet the Space bar, Galaxy Doughnut, Cinnamon Sugar Doughnut and Chocolate Fudge Brownie. These are handmade amazing sweets that go really well with a delicious cup of organic coffee from Keppler. If you want a tasty latte or cappu, we will foam it up with Bonsoy soy milk or Oatly Oat milk. Tea will come from April and also our drink menu is anything but boring. Vegan beer, Vin Nature and special drinks will surely enrich all the dishes.
Is there any sugar in our sWeeds and Mylkshakes? Yes. Gluten in our bread, for sure. Do we work with soy, only non GMO. Do we use refined stuff? Not really (we use flower for our breads). Do we use artificial colourings, certainly not. Do we use something of animal products, think again, HELL NO! Our aim is good and tasty vegan fast food, that is where possible, organic. We aim with The Dutch Weed Burger and the Joint on a paradigm shift, in which plant-based nutrition is no more than normal. ‘Serving positive change’ is therefore the credo of this new pearl in our capital. Through this street food concept, everyone can easily access the plant-based kitchen in a very tasty way. The Joint is not only for vegans and vegetarians; Everyone who loves good food is very welcome! We are going to stimulate, inspire and transform! So come by!
NOTE: June 21, we will certainly open our Joint! The opening hours will most likely be: Wednesday, Thursday and Sunday from 11:00 to 21:30 and Friday and Saturday from 11:00 to 22:00. You can find us at Nicolaas Beetsstraat 47 in Amsterdam on the corner with the Hasebroekstraat.
